Welcome to your new life as a responsible jewellery parent. These timeless (and slightly exaggerated) tips will ensure your bling lives a long, sparkly life… or at least survives a wild Friday night.Welcome to your new life as a responsible jewellery parent. These timeless (and slightly exaggerated) tips will ensure your bling lives a long, sparkly life… or at least survives a wild Friday night.
1. Let your jewellery breathe
Just like a fine wine or your overly dramatic houseplants, jewellery needs air. Keep it in a velvet-lined box with plenty of emotional space. Bonus points if you whisper affirmations to it every morning.
2. Avoid water like it’s a toxic ex
Jewellery + water = drama. Don’t wear your rings in the shower, pool, ocean, or during interpretive water dance performances. Moisture is the arch-nemesis of sparkle.
3. Grease and grime are not accessories
Put your jewellery on after applying perfume, lotion, hairspray, or deep-frying chicken. Your gems deserve better than Eau de Chip Oil.
4. Jewellery doesn’t sleep
No matter how well your bracelet cuddles you, remove all jewellery before bed. Not only will your chain avoid a 3am identity crisis, but your face will thank you for not waking up with mystery dents.
5. Clean like it’s a spa day
Give your jewellery a gentle soak in warm (not boiling!) soapy water and brush it with something soft, like a toothbrush or your partner’s ego. Rinse, dry, and tell it how shiny it looks.
6. Don’t mix the metals
Gold and silver have beef. Store them separately to avoid unnecessary scuffles in the drawer. Consider this the Mean Girls rule of jewellery: they can’t sit with each other.
7. If in doubt, leave it out
Not sure if your necklace can handle the gym, the beach, or that suspiciously chaotic toddler’s birthday party? Play it safe — accessorise with your charming personality instead.
